Saar Loop – A symbol of the Saarland region with the Cloef viewpoint

A unique natural wonder, carved out by the force of the water. The most scenic and famous view over the Saar Loop can be enjoyed at the Cloef viewpoint, 180 metres above the river in the Orscholz district, around 10 minutes' drive from the Old Abbey.

The 1,250 m treetop walk and its spectacular view tower overlooking the Saarschleife natural wonder have been open to the public since the 23rd of July 2016.

Boat trips from Mettlach

Various boat operators run excursions on the Saar Loop. From the vantage point of the ship's deck, you can see the emblematic symbol of the region from a different perspective. The landing pier is directly opposite the Old Abbey.

Roman Villa Borg

The Roman Villa Borg archaeological park provides a very impressive illustration of different aspects of Roman country life. The site is the only one of its kind in Europe. It is around twenty minutes' drive from the Old Abbey.

Burg Montclair

Burg Montclair is a ruined medieval castle near Mettlach, perched some 290 metres above sea level on one of the high mountain ridges surrounded by the Saar Loop, known as the Burgberg [castle mountain]. Montclair car park (Wald-Parkplatz) is around 8 minutes' drive – followed by a walk of around 45 minutes.

Völklinger Ironworks World Heritage Site

The Völklinger Ironworks World Heritage Site is one of the current 39 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. In terms of significance, it is ranked equally to the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Cologne Cathedral and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It is around 33 minutes' drive from the Old Abbey.
